WHAT IS MENTORING?
Mentoring is a service and trusting relationship that brings young people together with the individuals who offer guidance support and encouragement to the Mentor.
WHAT IS THE MENTORING PROGRAM?
The Mentoring Program serves as a “mentoring hub” for Curry Couty. We provide all mentoring programs in the county with technical assistance and coordination. We offer mentors in a community-based setting and a school-based setting for young people with disabilities and young people between 5 and 18 years of age.
HOW DOES THE MENTORING PROGRAM WORK?
From our own childhood, we may remember an adult who loved us just as were. We may not have been the smartest or most attractive, but we felt a support from this person that fueled a personal belief that we mattered. This is the heart f the Mentoring Program. Community members, teachers or parents can call the Mentoring Program if they would like a young person to be matched up with a mentor. With parent’s permission, the coordinator pairs the child with a screened, trained volunteer. We train mentors to be positive role models in a young person’s life in order to help children reach their fullest potential. Mentors give children special one on one attention.
WHERE DID THE MENTORING IDEA COME FROM?
Research and our own intuition tell us three things about children that form the basis of the Mentoring Program.
Children’s success in school is more directly related to how they feel about themselves than to their intelligence. Elementary teachers can accurately predict which of their students will graduate from high school. If a child views school as a positive place, graduation is more likely. Lastly, why do some children succeed against massive odds while others fail? The key is to resiliency is that one person believed in that child. That one person could be you working as a mentor for Curry County’s young people.
WHY IS MENTORING EFFECTIVE?
Kids who have a mentor are:
46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
27% less likely to begin drinking alcohol
32% less likely to skip school
32% less likely to hit someone
