GOALS:
v To reduce substance abuse amoung youth and, over time, among adults by addressing the factors in our county that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse
v To strengthen and sustain collaboration of the county coalition to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth.
OBJECTIVES:
v Serve as a catalyst for increased citizen participation and greater collaboration among all sectors and
organizations within our county.
v Enhance County efforts to promote and deliver effective substance abuse prevention strategies.
The Curry County Drug Free Communities (CCDFC) Coalition serves Curry County, an isolated, rural community located on the most southern west coast of the Pacific Ocean in Oregon. The county has three major population centers and three incorporated cities with schools. A waning economic environment has changed Curry from a county with a young population, vital primary industries, and low unemployment, to one with the highest median age in the state, declining industries, high unemployment and a per capita income lower that the state average.
The CCDFC Coalition is a first year applicant for the Drug Free Communities of citizens from all sectors of the county. The Coalition works cooperatively with South Coast Community Resource Center, Project Graduation, Groups, and the “Oregon Together” groups including Brookings-Harbor Youth Association Central Oregon Together, North Curry Families, and Children’s Center.
The Coalition seeks to accomplish its goals by shifting community norms through increased community participation and support to youth and consistent media messages. Coalition Building continues through training, informing the public, and recruiting key leaders and youth. The evaluate progress, the Coalition used the Oregon Healthy Teens survey and develops tools to monitor our progress in changing community norms, coalition, and your involvement.
